🚄 Surrey–Langley SkyTrain Update: What You Need to Know Now
Driving the news: Construction on the Surrey–Langley SkyTrain Extension is ramping up across Fraser Highway and into the Langley City Centre, marking a critical phase in a long-awaited transit expansion that connects Langley directly to the SkyTrain network.
Details: Here’s what’s happening now:
Traffic shifts: Fraser Highway is down to single-lane traffic each way, with detours, turn restrictions, and temporary stoppages.
Guideway work: Foundations and piers are actively being installed from 184 Street to Highway 10, with construction underway at Clayton and Willowbrook Stations.
Langley City Centre Station: Foundation work has begun and will continue through summer 2026.
Utilities: Utility relocations are ongoing along Fraser Highway, particularly near 64 Avenue to 201A Street and on Industrial Avenue.
Why it matters: This extension will give Langley direct rapid transit access for the first time, a game-changer for commuters, residents, and local businesses. Better transit means faster travel, more foot traffic, and a more connected community.
While the work may be disruptive, the long-term boost to economic activity and accessibility is substantial.
The big picture: The Surrey–Langley SkyTrain is part of a broader push to improve transit in the Lower Mainland.
When complete, it will extend Expo Line service by 16 km, with eight new stations, reshaping the region's transit landscape.
Between the lines: Local businesses are staying in the loop through regular meetings with the project team, coordinated by the Langley Chamber of Commerce. Businesses facing access challenges can get direct support to ease disruptions.
What’s next:
Construction begins on Langley’s Power and Propulsion Station by late 2025.
Willowbrook Station work starts spring 2026.
Pile driving along Fraser Highway and Industrial Avenue begins early 2026.
The bottom line: Langley’s biggest transit transformation is fully underway. While construction will continue into 2026, the payoff (a direct SkyTrain link and increased access to the region) is just around the corner.

🏗️ What’s Coming to Surrey? 5 Major Capital Projects Moving Ahead
Driving the news: Surrey is pushing forward with a series of major infrastructure projects aimed at expanding recreation, transportation, and community services over the next few years.
Details:
Cloverdale Sport & Ice Complex now has two NHL-sized rinks open and operational. A third is slated for construction soon, with a 2027 completion target. The third rink will include 334 new seats and space for a junior hockey team.
Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre in Whalley is expanding, with construction starting this month and a winter 2027 opening. New features include:
A second gym
Fitness and arts spaces
A learning kitchen
Enhanced seniors programming
The Newton Community Centre enters early work in 2026, aiming for a 2030 completion. The 175,000-sq-ft facility will include:
A 50-metre competition pool
Leisure pool
Two full gyms
A large new library replacing the current Newton branch
The Newton Town Centre Master Plan is nearing finalization, transforming 25 acres of public land into a mixed-use hub. Council review is expected by early 2026.
Firehall No. 6 is set for replacement as part of the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain expansion. Early planning is underway, with a 2028 completion goal.
Why it matters: These projects are about better access to recreation, safety, and civic services for Surrey residents. From Whalley to Newton, the developments will bring jobs, boost community pride, and help support a growing population with modern facilities.
The big picture: With over half a million residents, Surrey is one of the fastest-growing cities in B.C. These investments reflect a commitment to keeping pace with that growth through long-term planning and local engagement.
What’s next: Residents can expect visible construction at multiple sites through the decade.
City council will continue reviewing and greenlighting phases, especially for major projects like Newton Town Centre and Firehall No. 6.

🚀 Look West: B.C.'s Big Play to Lead Canada’s Future
Driving the news: British Columbia has launched Look West, a 10-year strategy to grow key industries, create jobs, and secure $200 billion in private-sector investment, positioning the province as Canada’s top economic engine.
Details:
Look West doubles skilled trades training funding by 2028-29.
Targets critical sectors: marine, aerospace, tech, life sciences, energy, construction, and food processing.
$33M investment into UBC’s vaccine and life sciences infrastructure.
Funding for five manufacturers, including B.C.’s first lithium refinery.
The big picture: Look West is about leveraging what B.C. already has: skilled workers, natural resources, clean energy, and proximity to booming Pacific markets.
It's a whole-of-province strategy to build modern infrastructure, scale future-ready industries, and speed up the pace of major project approvals.
By the numbers:
21% GDP growth since 2017, leading among large provinces.
43% wage growth since 2017, outpacing inflation.
1,000+ major projects underway.
4,800+ jobs protected or created via the B.C. Manufacturing Jobs Fund.
$36B in clean electricity investments.
What’s next: More action plans are on the way, especially for emerging sectors like quantum tech, critical minerals, and biomanufacturing.
Expect continued support for companies that are hiring, exporting, and building infrastructure that strengthens both B.C. and Canada's independence.
The bottom line: This plan directly supports good jobs, stronger local supply chains, and long-term resilience, especially for communities across B.C. that have often been left out of major national projects.
With eyes on global markets, B.C. is also reducing its reliance on the U.S. and helping Canada compete more effectively abroad.
